Cancer Debunked: Myth #1
Cancer has a reputation for being modest.
In fact, you never, ever hear the word ‘ego’ associated with Cancer because it is so well-masked… until you take a closer look.
Leo is the sign after Cancer; in the Zodiac, every succeeding sign externalizes the internal truth of the sign before it.
Aries externalizes Pisces’ repressed rage. Taurus externalizes Aries’ unshakable inner confidence. Gemini externalizes Taurus’ incessant internal monologue. Cancer externalizes Gemini’s emotional instabilities.
And more than anything: Leo externalizes Cancer’s enormous ego.
In other words, the ‘ego’ that people attribute to Leo actually manifests most strongly in Cancer— Leo only projects a big ego, while Cancer embodies it. Whether they’ll admit to it or not (to themselves or anyone else) Cancers believe that they’re already perfect; they see words about their potential as reality, instead of something to strive for.
(Which is why Cancer-positivity posts are pretty unproductive.)
That’s the true root of the famous Cancer insecurity— “I think I’m perfect, but other people don’t. They must be out to get me.” And it’s where the defensiveness/extreme ‘sensitivity’ comes in. Seriously, most people don’t deal well with criticism, but Cancer takes it to the next level!
This is also why many Cancers strive for goals that don’t require inner work, like getting good grades, getting fit, or maintaining a reputation for being kind/moral/generous.
If you ask, “what’s one thing you want to improve about yourself?” You’ll either get a superficial answer that’s low key fishing for compliments (“ugh, I hate my nose!”) or something about their external goals.
For a sign known for being moody and withdrawn, there’s actually very little introspection. The resulting lack of self-awareness the hallmark of excessive ego.
